The Incredible Shrinking Woman | |||
Thursday, July 31, 2003 ( 9:42 AM ) Melody Take another little piece of my heart now, baby I'm sure that by now everyone's heard about Bush's statement on gay marriages and about his support for the new proposed amendment that would define marriage as a union between a man and a woman. I'm not even angry anymore. I just feel tired and without hope. When will people stop fighting to undermine love? In such a frenzied world, where there's so much hate and violence, you would think that anyone would be happy to embrace and cherish it in whatever form it takes. As usual, when I'm feeling beaten down, I turn to poetry. Some people go to the Bible, but I don't believe God stopped speaking when John put the final punctuation mark on the book of Revelations. I think that sometimes divine truths and a whole lot of comfort and understanding can be derived through words someone was inspired to put down on paper just yesterday or a few years ago. Adrienne Rich has been my favorite poet since high school. My favorite poem by her (right now and for the last few years) is To the Days (sorry if you get pop-ups. Scroll down about mid-way through the page or do a quick search), which I think sums up partnership or marriage pretty well, but today I'd like to share with you a semi-happier poem entitled Miracle Ice Cream. Please enjoy. I particularly like this line: And, yes, you can be happy with one piece of your heart That's how to get through I guess, by dividing your heart up and looking for happiness one piece at a time. # |
